How do you choose the right PAT Testing company?
When you’re on the hunt for any company to do a job for you, choosing who to use is a minefield. I know this, I have had to look for builders, plumbers, even barbers, but when there are so many options, who do you choose? Ok, you didn’t fall for the barber did you? Check my profile photo… it’s been a long time since I needed a barber!
But I know how you feel, you need a PAT tester and you don’t know who to choose, so I have put together this little guide to help. If however, you can’t be bothered to read it and want a quicker answer, how about this – us, choose us. DRA PAT Testing. We are your best choice. We are, simple.

When choosing a PAT testing company, it is important to consider several factors to ensure that you select a reliable and reputable provider. Here are some key considerations when choosing a PAT testing company:
1. **Qualifications and certifications:** Verify that the PAT testing company personnel has the necessary qualifications and certifications. Look for qualifications such as C&G 2377, certifications such as PATTA, ECA, or CHAS, which indicate that the company meets industry standards and regulations.
City and Guilds 2377 is the only qualification available to PAT testers; it only takes a couple of days study and a short exam to achieve it, so getting into the industry is quite easy, so making sure your PAT tester has knowledge, experience etc too is essential. Don’t just rely on the qualification. All our engineers are qualified (unless they are training, and if so, they will always be working alongside a qualified experienced engineer)
An accreditation with an authorities body is important – do they have health and safety credentials; being registered for CHAS, Constructionline or Safe Contractor will help. We are accredited through CHAS.
Are they a member of the ECA – the Electrical Contractors Association
Finally, are they a member of PATTA – the Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association is the only trade association for the industry, and through it’s Working Standards it imposes minimum working requirements on its members. We are founder members of PATTA.
2. **Experience and expertise:** Assess the experience and expertise of the company. How long have they been in business? Do they specialize in PAT testing? Do they have experience in your specific industry or working environment? Choosing a company with relevant experience and expertise ensures that they understand your unique requirements and can provide accurate testing.
Checking their company history is no different to any other industry. There are some really good new companies, but there is no counting for experience. Although with some, it’s not always a good thing – there’s some major corner cutting going on with those big firms charging peanuts.
Are they limited? Check their accounts, make sure they make good money – that’s a sign of a company doing well.
A company with history offers more protection, you want to work with your PAT tester long term, even if you choose to get tested only once every 5 years you want to know they will still be there when you next need them.
3. **References and testimonials:** Ask for references or testimonials from previous clients. Contact these clients to gather feedback on the company’s reliability, professionalism, and quality of service. A reputable PAT testing company should be willing to provide references or testimonials upon request.
Check out our references, and Google reviews. We have over 500 5-star reviews across platforms.
4. **Comprehensive services:** Consider the range of services offered by the PAT testing company. Do they offer a comprehensive package that includes visual inspections, electrical tests, and functional checks? Can they handle the specific requirements of your industry or working environment? Choosing a company that offers a comprehensive range of services ensures that all aspects of your electrical equipment are thoroughly tested.
We provide not just Portable Appliance Testing, but also Fixed Appliance Testing, EICRs and other services.
5. **Cost and pricing structure:** Discuss the cost and pricing structure with the PAT testing company. Ensure that there are no hidden fees or additional charges. Compare quotes from multiple companies to ensure that you are getting a fair and competitive price.
Don’t go for the cheapest option – in the PAT world cheap often means they’re either new or cutting lots of corners to make money. Around £1.50 per item is a good price to consider.
6. **Insurance coverage:** Verify that the PAT testing company has appropriate insurance coverage. This provides an added layer of protection for your business in the event of any potential issues or accidents during the testing process.
By considering these factors and conducting thorough research, businesses can select a PAT testing company that meets their specific needs and ensures the safety and compliance of their electrical equipment.
